ARCADIA HOUSE
KNOXVILLE, TENNESSEE

On the architect’s first site visit, we climbed ladders to join our clients atop an abandoned roller rink to scan the viewshed possibilities . You need to be careful when you’re blown away on a slippery corrugated metal roof. The site is the highest hilltop on a peninsula formed by the Tennessee River that enjoys obvious views to the Smoky Mountains beyond the broad lake to the east. Not so obvious were the potential views to the closer lake shore west of the site, but culling some second-growth trees  and opening up space to feature a magnificent 150-year-old Heritage white oak created what is prized as the best part of the property now.

A signature feature of this 6,000-sf country house is the main living space flanked by terraces on the east and west, with easy flow to a large kitchen that occupies a modern “porch”. The pool house anchors the North end of the large lawn, housing recreational social space and an autonomous guest suite.
