THE BRICK HOUSE AT CHANCELLOR’S ROCK FARM
FLINT HILL, VIRGINIA

As much story as project, this is a song of continuity and renewal.

The storyThe story:  new owners of a model farm in the Virginia Piedmont seek out the original architect that designed multiple structures on that farm for a different owner in the 1990’s (see Chancellors Rock Farm – Phase 1) to design a new residence that will be in harmony with these buildings they had come to admire.

The siteThe site:  a prominent knoll that acts as a hinge between two halves of 500-acre working farm with dramatic views of Blue Ridge Mountain peaks and frontage on headwaters of the Rappahannock River. A new entry drive designed by RWA accesses the house and the existing “market garden” suggesting the concept of the house as a lodge or “ordinary” located along that road.

The projectThe project: a 6,000-s.f. country house for empty nesters that can welcome friends, adult children, grandchildren, and dogs of course. Embed the house into the hill so the parking court and entry to the house via the main stair hall or mudroom are  a half-story lower in elevation, and upon arrival visitors ascend to the main level where all interior spaces and adjacent terraces enjoy unrivalled views. The mudroom and kitchen are on the east end, connected by a path to the Market Garden, while the primary suite is on the opposite end, where the topography was most conducive to the creation of a walled formal garden.
